Hundreds of youngsters in Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire learn about healthy eating

Nearly 500 children from schools across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire have been finding out all about healthy eating as part of a series of special classes by Central England Co-operative.

A total of 492 children from three schools were treated to a Healthy Eating workshop during January.

The workshops offer the chance for children to get hands-on with a range of activities, including how to make fun fruit kebabs, gain an understanding of food labelling, as well being taught about the importance of getting meal portion sizes right so that no food goes to waste.

The schools that took part were Millfield Primary School, in Littleport, Rothwell Junior School, and Stanion Primary School, in Kettering.

Wayne Jones, head teacher at Stanion Primary School, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the Healthy Eating workshops delivered by Central England Co-op and gained a lot from this experience.

“Our younger children were able to sample fresh fruit and look at a range of different healthy foods and the older children looked at the food packaging and discussed what foods are healthy to eat.”

Karen Ball, Member and Community Relations Officer, said:  “As an ethical retailer, we are more than happy to support our local schools to help teach the importance of healthy eating and why including five portions of fruit and veg a day is important to a healthy lifestyle.

“Our aim is to educate and have a positive impact on the attitudes and behaviour of local people at an earlier age and I am delighted to have worked with schools across
Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire to help them learn more about health and wellbeing.”
