We want to say a big ‘thank you’ to our colleagues, members and customers after being named as Leading Co-operative of the Year 2016.
The Society competed with Scotmid Co-operative and The Southern Co-operative in a public vote before being crowned the winner at a recent ceremony.
Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative Martyn Cheatle said: “I am proud of our colleagues, members and customers, who took the time to vote for us.
“We are one of the largest Co-operative Societies in the UK with a modern, forward looking business employing over 8,700 people. As an inclusive and progressive society our vision is to be the UK’s best co-operative by making a real difference to our members and communities.
“I believe winning this award shows that we are on the right track and that our members and customers feel we have their best interests at heart.
“This award will be celebrated throughout the year and used to highlight the positive impact we continue to make on the communities in which we trade and the wider UK economy.
“So I’d like to say a heart-felt thank you to everyone who voted, you have provided Central England Co-operative with the inspiration to strive for even higher levels of community engagement, business success and Co-operative working.”
Winning Leading Co-operative of the Year adds to a growing list of honours, including being awarded the Investors in People Accreditation for the value we place on colleague development and being the first retailer worldwide to achieve all four of The Carbon Trust’s internationally recognised environmental certifications.
The Co-operative of the Year award is organised by Co-operatives UK for the country’s thousands of co-operative businesses. This year, three award categories were introduced, meaning 11 organisations of all kinds were shortlisted. The awards are a showcase of the diversity and success of the UK’s co-operative sector. With circa 10,000 votes over the last four weeks, it has been an engaged and good natured competition.
The awards showcase independent co-operatives throughout the UK who help to contribute £34 billion to the British economy each year.
Ed Mayo, secretary general of Co-operatives UK, said: “Central England Co-operative is the well-deserved winner of the Leading Co-operative of the Year award, a demonstration of the business’s ability to balance commercial performance and successful engagement with its staff, members and wider community. Congratulations to everyone at Central England Co-operative!”
Central England Co-operative’s financial figures show increasing profit (up 5 per cent on the previous year) and continued growth in food stores and funeral homes thanks to a strong asset base and long term sustainable strategy. The Society has over 260,000 active members and projected gross sales in 2016/17 of £958 million and is one of the UK’s largest independent retail societies.
An integrated approach to community support and local involvement has resulted in colleagues, members and customers helping to raise over £1 million for the Newlife Foundation for disabled children, all of which has directly benefitted families living in the Society’s trading areas.
The Society also gives over £200,000 per year to local community projects via its Community Dividend scheme and announced the installation of hundreds of lifesaving defibrillators across its outlets in the coming year. Food waste, youth unemployment, health and wellbeing, support for local producers and staff volunteering are other significant areas of focus for the Society, all of which impacted on the voting for Leading Co-operative of the Year.
