A brand-new coffee shop has opened its doors at a Derby Central England Co-op following the completion of a £620,000 project to transform the retailer’s community food store.

The Insomnia Coffee Company outlet is its first in Derbyshire and is based at the retailer’s food store in Burton Road, Littleover following a redevelopment of the site which has also seen the store’s frontage refreshed.

Insomnia is Ireland’s leading independent coffee shop chain where it was founded in 1997 but has been rapidly expanding into the United Kingdom with outlets across the country, including in several Primark stores.

Central England Co-op has chosen Insomnia as their franchise partner, and the spacious and elegant coffee shop not only serves Fairtrade tea and coffee and a great selection of sandwiches, cakes and snacks, it will also soon offer dedicated community space available for local groups and organisations to book.

The coffee shop was officially opened by Central England Co-op President Elaine Dean, and Team Leader Rebecca Rayner said her and her team have been eagerly awaiting welcoming the local community after the project was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “We are delighted to have finally opened our doors and we would like to thank the community and all the food store’s customers and members for their patience – I hope they agree with us that it was definitely worth the wait!

“I am proud to be leading a great team here and to be able to offer the Littleover community a modern and stylish meeting place to have a delicious Fairtrade tea or coffee and a bite to eat with friends and family.

“We have already had some lovely feedback and although the delay has been frustrating, it has enabled us to ensure that we can introduce a range of social distancing and safety measures to keep colleagues and customers safe during these uncertain times.”

To mark the launch visitors have been able to get a coffee with a difference from a special interactive selfie machine where they can choose to have their selfie or even a special message created on the top of their coffee.

There are also a range of opening offers available, including free coffee vouchers available to shoppers when they make a purchase in the Central England Co-op food store.

Harry O’Kelly, Insomnia Coffee Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to add another high street retailer to our concession partner portfolio – Central England Co-operative. A leading UK brand with 430 trading outlets across 16 counties so this is a partnership we are very excited about.

“As a company who prides itself on enhancing the in-store customer experience, Central England Co-operative was a natural fit for us, also sharing our ethos on Fairtrade and sustainability.

“At Insomnia we bring the best tasting quality coffee to our consumers through carefully sourcing the best Fairtrade coffee from around the globe, we constantly change and adapt to bring the best range and variety so that we meet our consumers ever-changing needs and lifestyles.

“Our philosophy on customer service is simple – we place our customers at the core of the business – when they are happy we are all happy. That is what Insomnia Coffee Company is all about.”

The Insomnia Coffee Company at Central England Co-op in Littleover is open Monday to Saturday 7.30am-5pm and Sunday 10am-4pm.
