A gorgeously green Christmas

Simple steps towards sustainable celebrations

With just a few easy changes, you could be well on your way to a more sustainable Christmas this year. Let’s take a look at some greener ways to make your festive season sparkle.

Cards and calendars

Get a reusable advent calendar and fill it with treats: perhaps craft supplies, homemade goodies, jokes or notes. Send recyclable Christmas cards, or ecards, or give people a call instead.

Greener gifts

Set up a family Secret Santa, so you’re only buying one gift each. Give presents made from recycled materials; gift an experience; make or bake something special. Wrap in recyclable paper or fabric, secure with ribbon, and use last year’s cards as tags.

Eat your greens

Eating more plant-based food is as good for the planet as it is for you. Try making our delicious Vegetarian Christmas Wreath, and buy meat-free alternatives to festive staples like pigs in blankets. When you do eat meat, choose British produce to keep your food miles low.

Cut food waste

Christmas is a time to indulge a little, but try to be realistic about the amount of food you need for your family and guests. Get creative with any leftovers or freeze them for another time.

Deck the halls

Reuse decorations from last year. If any need replacing, choose natural materials like wood, rattan or wool, or make your own. Create beautiful paper chains and snowflakes from recycled paper, and turn up the twinkle with LED and solar lights.

Table service

Choose cloth tablecloths and napkins that you can use time and again. Help celebrations go with a bang with recyclable crackers that offer something other than plastic toys.

Traditional trees

A real tree is the most eco-friendly – the carbon footprint of an artificial tree is around ten times more. Choose a tree that’s been sustainably grown, ideally in the UK, and recycle it after Christmas through your council collection or a local charity.

Eco alternatives

Choose a potted tree that you can replant after Christmas, or rent one from a local supplier. Buy or make a reusable tree from natural materials such as wood or twigs. Decorate trees in your garden with outdoor lights and indoor houseplants with fairy lights.
