James’s upcycled bird feeder

You don’t need to spend a lot to help support the wildlife in your garden. This summer, upcycle a plastic bottle and a couple of wooden spoons into this fabulous bird feeder – it makes a great project for the kids during the summer holidays, ready to watch the birds all year round.

What you’ll need

1 large empty plastic bottle

2 wooden spoons

Twine

Small pair of sharp scissors

Bird seed

How to make it

1. Use your scissors carefully to make two holes on opposite sides of the bottle, a few centimetres up from the base.

2. Push the spoon through both holes to make the first perch

3. Repeat this for a second perch, but about halfway up the bottle. Carefully push your scissors through the bottle to make the holes, then push the second spoon through so it sits at right angles to the first perch.

4. Use your scissors to create a few drainage holes in the bottom of the bottle.

5. Make a hole about 4cm above the ‘spoon’ of each perch so that the birds can land on the scoop and access the seed.

6. Make two holes by the neck of the bottle and thread a length of twine through so you can hang it up

7. Fill the feeder with seed. Make it small enough for the birds to be able to access easily, but not so small that it falls through the drainage holes

8. Hang your seed from a tree and wait for the birds to arrive.
