Bretby Crematorium

Bretby Crematorium is set in attractive woodland grounds adjacent to the A511 Leicester to Burton upon Trent road between Burton and Swadlincote. It provides a peaceful haven for quiet contemplation and remembrance.  The grounds are maintained as natural woodland, with no plaques, memorial stones or rose beds.

To support the continued need for social distancing, you may only visit our two crematorium chapels if you have an arranged service that you are attending.  Following updated government guidance, we will now be able to welcome up to 14 mourners to services in our Anglesey Chapel and up to 30 mourners to services in our Carnarvon Chapel.  We ask that each person attending a service wears a protective face covering, but we recognise that some people may be exempt from this new government requirement for health or religious reasons.  Our two chapels each have a separate waiting area, although we ask you to be mindful that the rule of six people gathering applies to these areas outside of each chapel and we continue to support the two-metre social distancing requirements and the wearing of a protective face covering.

The crematorium is supporting with the collecting or scattering of ashes by limited appointment only, therefore please get in touch with us so we may mutually agree a date and time for interment.  Thank you for your understanding during 2020 in lieu of the restrictions that have been in place during the pandemic.

Bretby Crematorium is pleased to offer webcasting of services to allow everyone who cannot attend services due to the Coronavirus to be able to say goodbye to loved ones they have lost. This offers an alternative compromise when wider family and friends are asked not to attend, to support the restrictions on the number of permitted attendees. The service is subject to availability and a fee applies, as the facility is provided by a support partner. Your local funeral home can include this service in the funeral arrangements. Please also ask the Bretby team for further information, should you wish to learn more.

The webcast service can also be provided as a recording, which may be watched later, which has been welcomed by relatives who live overseas and in a different time zone to the U.K.  The live or recorded services are accessible through a dedicated website, details of which are shared once the service has been requested and scheduled with the Bretby team.

You are welcome to walk through the Bretby Crematorium grounds or garden of remembrance to remember a loved one, during the hours of 9am to 5pm, but you are asked to continue to observe social distancing and to comply with the requests of the Bretby team. We regret that we are unable to permit access to the Flower Room or Book of Remembrance from 5 November 2020, until restrictions are eased once again.

We will continue to keep families informed of changes that come into effect because of government legislation, such as adapting to tiers and further lockdown measures.

Our annual memorial carol service, held for family and friends to remember their loved ones, along with the display of wreaths in the floral court will be shared as an online memorial service in December, due to the continued need to respect social distancing and support the government measures that keep us safe.  Details of how to join the online service will be shared nearer the time.

You may wish to join us at our United in Light online memorial service, which will take place on Sunday 15 November at 7pm and offers an opportunity for everyone to join together, wherever they are, to remember the lives lost in trying times. Click here to learn more.

The Bretby team offers a range of keepsakes and memorials; this includes the Book of Remembrance, which is beautifully inscribed by a calligrapher and the book is housed in a purpose-built chapel which will reopen again once the current restrictions are eased.  Social distancing measures will continue to apply in all areas of the crematorium.  Whilst the Book of Remembrance chapel is closed at present, an online Book of Remembrance may be accessed at any time.
