Central England Co-op in Brigstock has continued its backing for charity Dementia UK by throwing its support behind a shoppers’ fundraising efforts for the cause.

Shopper Wilma Rennie approached her local Central England Co-op in High Street for support with her ‘Time for a Cuppa’ fundraising event for Dementia UK, which she wanted to organise to ‘do her bit’ for the charity after losing her mum to dementia six years ago.

The retailer was happy to help, particularly as Dementia UK is currently its corporate charity and to whom it has donated over £1.3 million since partnering with the cause, which provides specialist care and support for those living with dementia, and their loved ones, through its Admiral Nurse service.

Time for a Cuppa is Dementia UK’s biggest annual fundraising event and encourages people to get together with colleagues or friends and family over a cuppa and some cake, while raising money to help dementia specialist nurses to support more families facing dementia.

Brigstock Co-op Store Manager Claire Starmer presented Wilma with a hamper of Co-op goodies for her to raffle off at her event.

She said: “When we heard what Wilma was doing we were really keen as a store to support her event, particularly given Central England Co-op is working with Dementia UK and we are well aware of the fantastic work they do to support people with dementia and their loved ones.

“The Society is also supporting Time for a Cuppa with events taking place across our food stores and funeral homes, including at our store in Brigstock, so I’m delighted to present Wilma with this hamper and wish her all the best for her fundraiser.”

Wilma, who is a member of Brigstock WI, is holding the Time for a Cuppa event after losing her mum to dementia six years ago and will be holding a raffle and tombola to help raise funds.

She said: “This is something that is close to my heart after losing my mum to the condition and we also have a few members of our WI who are in the early stages of it, so I wanted to do my bit and help out this wonderful cause.

“I approached the team at Brigstock Central England Co-op hoping I might be able to get a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine for the tombola, so to receive this lovely hamper is fantastic and it’s great to see their support for Dementia UK.”
