Burton church handed an early Christmas present in the shape of £2,000

Parishioners at a Burton church have unwrapped an early Christmas present as part of latest payout from Central England Co-operative’s Community Dividend Fund.

Members of St Mary’s Church, in Stretton, were delighted to receive a festive funding boost of £2,000, with a total of £42,555 handed out to 26 good causes across 16 counties.

The funds will be used to help pay for a new boiler and new radiators.

If the funding had now been approved, the church ran the risk of having to condemn its current heating system – putting events across the winter in jeopardy.

Karen Fearn, church warden at St Mary’s Church, said: “St Mary's Church hall is a great asset to the community of Stretton.

“It is used baby and toddler groups, adult dpecial needs groups, a lunch club for isolated and older members of the community, the Scouts and dance groups - plus numerous one-off activities such as concerts and parties.

“The old system is close to the end of its life and no longer able to keep the hall as warm as we would want it.

“So it is fabulous news that Central England Co-Operative is able to support us financially toward the installation of new heating in the hall.

“It will allow us to continue to provide a centre for the community which can thrive for many years to come.”

Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are handed out every three months to a wide range of applicants.

The fund guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive across its trading area of 16 counties from the Midlands to the east coast.

Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend scheme.”

People can apply for funding by visiting https://communities.centralengland.coop/ or heading in store to pick up an application form.

Potential applicants have to have been a Central England Co-operative member for six months, the project should be in the trading area of a Central England Co-
operative store and all applications will need a referee.
