Six projects in Derbyshire are celebrating after sharing over £11,000 in the latest payout from Central England Co-operative’s Community Dividend Fund.

A wide range of groups, organisations and charities were handed grants, with a total of £57,000 handed out to 36 good causes across 16 counties.

St Luke’s Church, in Heanor, will use £2,650 to pay for a new heater to ensure the dozens of community groups who use the site keep warm.

Yvonne Lomax, from the church, said: “We would like to thank Central England Co-operative for its generous award of £2,560 which will be used to replace a specialist wall mounted gas heater within the church.

“This will enable the congregation, clergy, schools, choirs, groups and the local community to continue using the church in comfort, especially during the winter months.”

Rykneld Bowling Club, in Farley Road, Derby, has been handed £1,250 for new audio and visual equipment to support educational work in the area.

A total of £2,500 has been awarded to the Hope Centre, in Curzon Street, to pay for food, duvets and underwear to help support homeless people in the city.

Paul Brookhouse, Director of Community Development, said: “This grant will help us to provide essential food and household items to some of the most in need individuals or families within Derby.

“Without support like this, we would not be able to provide this service to those who most need it.”

Terminus Bowling Club, based in Chesterfield, has been granted £1,300 for a new storage shed.

Trevor Smith, Trustee of the Terminus Bowling Club, said: “The members of the Terminus Bowling Club are delighted to have been successful in our application for a Central England Co-operative Community Dividend Award.

“It is the first funding the club has ever applied for and we never dreamed that we would be successful the first time. The grant will be used to erect a new secure storage unit which will be used to store chemicals and Fertiliser that are used on the green and we hope to have this in place for the new 2018 season.”

Cinema Middleton will use £1,000 as part of an ambitious project to try and start a community cinema in Matlock.

A total of £2,500 will be used by Horsley Village Hall to help pay for a brand new kitchen to support various projects held at the community centre.

In 2017, a total of 122 groups and organisations shared £209,000 to spend on a wide variety of projects.

Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are handed out every three months to a wide range of applicants.

The fund guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive across its trading area of 16 counties from the Midlands to the east coast.

Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “The Community Dividend Fund reflects a key principle of our society, in that we reward the loyalty of our customers by investing in and supporting local communities.

“I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend Fund scheme.”
