Father’s Day shopping habits revealed as part of new Co-op research

New research from Central England Co-op has offered an insight into the shopping habits of sons and daughters ahead of Father’s Day.

The retailer published specially collated data that showed 44% of customers will pick up an item for their dad in the week before the annual celebration and just 22% will leave it until the day.

The most popular item purchased of those surveyed was a Father’s Day Card, with data showing that card sales peak at 10am on Father’s Day as customers pop in on the way to see their dad – whereas 5pm is peak card buying time during the week before when sons and daughters pick one up on the way home from work.

The most surprising result to come out of the research was that 57% of people admitted that they would spend MORE on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day.

Figures from last year showed that the top items when it came to people picking up a last-minute gift on the day included Cadbury chocolate, Carling and Stella lager, spirits such as Famous Grouse and Gordon’s and Co-operative award-winning prosecco.

One of the biggest areas of growth recorded has been in the category of special gifting, with the likes of key rings and gift sets proving popular with children wanting to get something for their dad.

This year, Central England Co-op is also expecting to see even more interest in real ales, especially following the roll-out of a brand new range of drinks that have been sourced from local breweries.

Martin Hill, Head of Product and Category, said: “As a business, we constantly monitor what our customers want and this is why we have some great deals on cards, chocolate and beers, wines and spirits in time for Father’s Day.

“Also, this year England’s first World Cup game is the day after Father’s Day providing the perfect opportunity to get something for dads to help them cheer on the Three Lions against Tunisia.

“Whether customers like to plan ahead or leave it to the last minute, we have something for everyone to help celebrate with their father this June.”

Among the great deals on offer at local Central England Co-op Food Stores are a range of Cadbury chocolate from just £1, Famous Grouse Scotch for £14 and a special Father’s Day mug for just £5.
