Starling Murmuration in Belper brings out the wildlife lovers

Central England Co-operative’s store in Belper is enjoying an early show of spring, with hundreds of starlings performing murmurations every evening in the air above the building.

Ornithologists and wildlife lovers are arriving just before the event, to photograph the spectacular display. Around 15,000 birds are a part of this murmuration and within the next six weeks they will be returning to Scandinavia for the summer months.

The display starts firstly over the town of Belper, before moving over the foodstore, and then the birds roost in a nearby laurel hedge for the night.

Kevin Tromans, Manager at the store said: ‘We are really enjoying the displays in the evening at the moment. It is a definite sign that spring is on the way. There are quite a few people coming along every night which is great to see, and they are not just birdwatchers. It is a nice thing for the town to bond over.’
