Temporary changes for shoppers as part of £3 million makeover of Lichfield Central England Co-op store

Central England Co-op customers and members visiting Boley Park Food Store in the coming weeks will notice two major temporary changes as part of its £3 million revamp.

As part of work that will see an overhaul of the entire site, shoppers will be using a temporary store from Monday, 14 September to allow for a brand new flagship site to be built alongside it.

The retailer wants to reassure customers that they will still be able to access all of their vital food and essentials – albeit in a new, temporary home.

Drivers are also being informed that the Petrol Filling Station on site is also closing from Monday, 14 September for four weeks to allow for its major overhaul to be completed.

Jamie Joyce, store manager, said: “We are all really excited that this major revamp is progressing quickly and have heard some great feedback from our customers and members.

“However, to ensure we can complete the work as soon as possible, we will be relocating to a temporary store next door to where our current store is to allow for our new flagship shop to be built.

“The improvement works will also see our Petrol Filling Station close for four weeks. We know that this may impact many of our customers but we just want them to know that the short term disruption will be well worth the wait when the work is completed.

“Despite this disruption, we will be open throughout the works to ensure our communities are served and will keep everyone up to date with the latest news via in-store messaging, posters and local press announcements.”

The £3 million project includes the brand new store, revamped petrol station, a large unit that will house a gym and two further retail units.

The new store will feature a raft of new elements including special eco-friendly fridges and lighting, a free water refill station, a phone charging area, customer seating inside and outside of the store as well as self-scan checkouts.

It will also include a range of safety features in the light of the Coronavirus pandemic such as plastic screens, a one-way system and social distancing measures.

Other new features will include a new car park layout, including wider spaces, better traffic flow and improved lighting and walkways, new trees and planters, a new car wash, electric charging points for cars and a bike repair station.

If work goes as planned, it is hoped that the new store will open in November. Once the new store is open for business work will begin on the three additional business units.
