YOU’LL WIN THEIR HEART WITH CO-OP FLOWERS AND PROSECCO THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

Central England Co-op has released research on the shopping habits of customers in its stores on Valentine’s Day that shows how Britain’s couples spoil each other with cards and gifts for their loved ones.

The Co-op research shows that customers increasingly choose Valentine’s gifts not just for what they are, but what the gifts they purchase tell their partner about their relationship and romantic intentions.

British shoppers love their chocolate, and as romantic gifts go, it is the stand out product for Valentine’s Day, to the extent that manufacturers re-brand their usual packaging to include hearts and flowers and all things romantic. From the more traditional boxes of chocolates to sharing bags, chocolate sales at Valentine’s are always high.

A staple for UK celebrations in recent years, the Co-op’s award winning Prosecco sees a huge sales rise on Valentine’s Day itself.  A surprise in the beers, wines and spirits category is that Carling 10 packs are very popular, as an alternative choice to wine or bubbly.

Valentine’s isn’t always about food and drink, with cute cuddly toys taking centre stage as an added gift item. Coming up the ranks in popularity are products with a more practical purpose, showing that gift giving at Valentine’s is not always in pursuit of romance such as last year’s surprise top valentines seller – a stainless steel travel mug! Valentine’s cards for both singles and couples feature, although interestingly, cards themed for singles to send to those they admire from afar are much higher in the sales rankings than cards between couples.

The traditional Valentine’s gift of flowers, bouquets and single stem blooms always see a huge jump from an average Co-op trading week as people buy flowers for their loved ones, usually on Valentine’s Day itself to make sure they are bought at their freshest.

The nature of convenience retailing is that even when the larger supermarkets are closed; convenience stores are still open, situated in local, easy to get to locations.  Central England Co-op Stores are always well stocked so shoppers can nip in for those last minute essentials.
