On the 1st of February, Central Co-op hosted its second annual “Tea and Talk” event to mark Time to Talk Day, at Insomnia Café in Blaby, Leicestershire.

Time to Talk Day is an annual occasion that raises awareness about the importance of mental health conversations and the positive impact they can have on individuals and communities. Central Co-op, in collaboration with Insomnia Café and Co-op Group, is dedicated to providing a welcoming space for people to come together, share experiences and support one another.

The "Tea and Talk" event offered a unique opportunity for anyone to come along and enjoy a half-price cup of tea or coffee while sitting down for a chat. The event aims to break down the stigma surrounding mental health by creating an atmosphere that encourages openness and connection.

In addition to discounted hot drinks, the event featured engaging activities such as mental health bingo and board games. These activities are designed to facilitate discussions, promote understanding and contribute to the overall goal of making mental health a topic that is comfortable to talk about.

Dan, aged 32, said: “This event is a good opportunity to help people who are struggling with their mental health, as I do. It encourages us to open up more.”

Suzanne, aged 59, commented: “I think this is wonderful – it’s a marvellous what [Central Co-op, Co-op Group and Insomnia Café] are doing today. I used to work for the NHS, so I know how important it is to look after people in our communities, especially the elderly, as they don’t always get access to mental health support.”

Lynne, aged 65, concluded: “I go to the Co-op’s Painting for Anxiety Group, at A Place to Grow in Enderby – it saved my life. Today I’m here with Lucy, who I met at the group, we’re now good friends and help one another, I always look forward to seeing her.”

Representatives from Home Instead, who offer personalised home care for seniors and those who require specialist mental health support, and the Blaby branch of Mind, one of the UK’s leading mental health charities, stopped by to show their support and offer guidance to anyone who needed it.
