Planet over profit

In 2017, we were awarded Retail Energy Project of the Year for the way we work with our suppliers, and our eco-friendly store upgrades. And we’ve earned the Carbon Trust Triple standard every year since. It recognises the way we’re reducing energy, water and waste across our food stores, petrol stations and funeral homes. It’s all part of our quest to drive sustainability throughout our business.

Cutting carbon completely

We’ve brought down our carbon emissions by 72% since 2010. And we’re working on the rest.

In November 2020, we joined over 60 other leading retailers in committing to make our stores carbon neutral by 2030. We’re doing the same for deliveries by 2035 and products by 2040. It’s an ambitious plan, and a fantastic opportunity to make a difference collectively.

War on plastic waste

We’ve already removed 380,000 items of single use plastics from our stores, and we’ve committed to removing single use plastics from our own products by 2023. And that includes making all our own-brand packaging easily recyclable.

We’ve already switched to foil and card trays and sleeves for many products; our milk bottle tops are easier to recycle; selected stores have compostable carrier bags. We’re also stocking more products that are made from sustainable sources, such as the Econature range of stationery and our Keel eco toys.
