Planned new Co-op store in Yorkshire will bring range of benefits to local community

Central England Co-op plans for a new store in West Yorkshire will result in a range of benefits for the local community.

The retailer has applied to turn a former medical centre in Barnsley Road, South Kirkby, into a brand new convenience store which will result in major investment in the area and the creation of dozens of new jobs.

The new Food Store will offer shoppers an expansive range of products and will be fitted out with

pioneering new energy efficient refrigeration technologies to minimise environmental impact, LED lighting and a lifesaving defibrillator.

Local people will also be offered the opportunity to mark the opening of the new store with a special Golden Ticket Giveaway where prizes ranging from a big screen TV to Co-op vouchers will be handed out to the first 50 customers through the doors.

David Rudge, Operations Manager for the area, said: “We are excited about our plans for South Kirkby and about being part of the local community.

“The plans, if approved, will see a vibrant and modern store opening in a busy area that will provide all customers and members with all of their essentials and also see us invest in the local economy and create jobs for local people.”

Customers and members can also look forward to taking advantage of a range of community benefits by shopping at the planned store.

The retailer runs a Community Dividend Fund scheme, which gives local good causes and community groups the chance to apply for a grant ranging from £100 to £5,000.

Last year, the retail spent nearly £1.5 million revamping stores in New Mill, Thongsbridge, Wooldale and Halifax Road, Birchencliffe, as well as opening a new store in High Street, Dodworth, and plans for a new site in Keresforth Hill Road, Barnsley.

Profits from customers using these stores have been reinvested for use by the Community Dividend Fund to help seven groups and charities in Yorkshire by donating over £14,000 – helping everything from schools to family support charities.

Other benefits from the opening of the planned store would include a wide range of educational and recreational workshops and classes for its members and communities.

A decision is set to be made on plans for the new store by the end of May and people can keep up-to-date with plans at www.centralengland.coop
